DK Suresh flags Re 1/litre milk sale by Flipkart apps as anti-farmer tactic harming farmers. Seeks CCI probe to protect dairies
BAMUL President D K Suresh has voiced strong objections to e-commerce platforms selling milk at just Re 1 per litre, terming it a predatory tactic that harms dairy farmers.
Predatory pricing allegations
Suresh, also a former MP and brother of Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, accused Flipkart’s quick commerce arm of using investor subsidies to offer half-litre packs for Re 1 as a loss-leader strategy. He claims this distorts the dairy market, where farmers receive Rs 38-40 per litre, and undermines cooperatives like Nandini.
Complaint to authorities
In a letter to PM Narendra Modi and CCI dated March 14, Suresh urged probes under the Competition Act for abuse of dominance. He highlighted risks to farmer incomes, small retailers, and the cooperative ecosystem built over decades.

Flipkart’s defence
Flipkart responded that promotional campaigns with bank partners enhance value, with sellers receiving full prices and no impact on procurement. The firm reaffirmed commitment to farmers and cooperatives.
Broader concerns
Suresh warned that sustained deep discounts could erode stable pricing for 14.5 lakh litres already sold, sparking a farmer crisis. He called for government intervention to protect livelihoods and fair competition in Bengaluru’s dairy sector.
