MVD bid to rein in rash driving by delivery boys of e-commerce platforms

Following a rise in traffic rule violations, the Motor Vehicles department has initiated steps to curb rash and negligent driving by delivery boys of e-commerce platforms. According to Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju, notices have been issued to delivery representatives of Blinkit, Swiggy, Zepto, Bigbasket etc., following rise in traffic violations by delivery boys of these firms.

The online platforms have been given 15 days to streamline and align policies regarding road safety, failing which action will be taken by enforcement agencies. Notices have been issued to dark stores and quick delivery platforms after the MVD noted a rise in rash and negligent driving by two-wheeler delivery boys of these companies.

Many online platforms are encouraging delivery of items within seven minutes or 20 minutes, which is one of the main reasons for the increased road safety violations. Speeding, rashness, and non-wearing of safety gear are some of the most commonly noted safety issues among delivery boys, says Mr. Nagaraju.

In normal circumstances, other drivers on the road often avoid them, fearing accidents. The delivery boys rush to deliver their products and catch the next order to maximise their income. Many a time, these delivery boys are given unrealistic deadlines by the online store, and even customers are promised unrealistic timelines to gain market share. However, all these amount to compromises on road safety, say MVD officials.
