Aston Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday evening, for their seventh straight league win this season, and their tenth consecutive win across competitions. It was a star turn from Morgan Rogers who scored two stunning goals, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. Villa remain third, a point behind second-placed Manchester City and three behind leaders Arsenal.
Villa began brightly, and had two early chances through Ollie Watkins and Rogers, but missed them both, and then United threatened through Matheus Cunha. However, it was a stunning Rogers goal just before half-time that broke the deadlock. He showed excellent control to bring down a fizzed pass from John McGinn, and then cut in past Leny Yoro, before curling a top-class finish past Senne Lammens.
However, Villa didn’t hold on to their lead for long, as United equalised in first-half stoppage time. Matty Cash dwelt on the ball for too long, allowed Patrick Dorgu to pounce, and then the ball fell to Cunha, who curled the ball past Emiliano Martinez with ease.
In the first half, a hamstring injury also meant that Bruno Fernandes couldn’t take the field for the second half, which was a body blow for United.
Ten minutes into the second half, Rogers scored what eventually turned out to be the winner, after collective poor defending from United, allowed him to curl another unstoppable strike past Lammens from the inside left channel.
United should’ve equalised a few minutes after that, as Dorgu’s inch-perfect cross was headed wide by Cunha, but that is as close as they got all game.
