Iran Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei whereabouts under speculation, Russian envoy says he is in country

The whereabouts and condition of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, have become the subject of intense global speculation, as the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remains out of public view more than a month into the war in West Asia.

According to remarks cited by Russian media outlet RTVI, Moscow’s ambassador to Iran said Mojtaba is still in the country but has refrained from making public appearances “for understandable reasons,” Reuters reported.

The statement comes amid a swirl of conflicting claims about his health and status.

Mojtaba assumed the position of Supreme Leader after his father was killed in the February 28 US-Israeli strike. Since then, he has not appeared in public even once.

All statements attributed to him so far, including his first address on March 12 and his Nowruz message on March 20, have been issued in written form and read by state television presenters.

The uncertainty has been amplified by comments from US President Donald Trump, who recently claimed that Iran’s new leader could be “dead or in critical condition”.

Washington has also indicated it believes Mojtaba may have been injured, though no official confirmation has been provided.

Despite the silence, Iranian state media reported that Mojtaba issued a message thanking the people and religious leadership of Iraq for supporting Tehran “in the face of aggression.”

However, the message offered no clarity on how or from where it was delivered, further deepening the mystery.
