Innovative Tool to Support Early Risk Detection
Global healthcare leader Abbott Laboratories has launched the International Cardio-Renal Risk Assessment and Stratification (ICRAS) Tool, a web-based platform designed to help doctors across India identify heart and kidney risks in people living with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
Developed with guidance from a panel of leading medical experts, the ICRAS tool enables clinicians to assess cardio-renal risk at an early stage. By supporting early risk stratification, the platform aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications commonly associated with Type 2 diabetes.
Addressing India’s Growing Diabetes Burden
India continues to face a growing diabetes crisis and is often referred to as the “diabetes capital of the world.” Currently, around 101 million people in the country live with diabetes. Moreover, heart and kidney diseases remain among the most serious and common complications of Type 2 diabetes.
Therefore, timely identification of cardio-renal risk has become increasingly important. Early assessment allows healthcare professionals to initiate preventive strategies and manage the disease more effectively.
How the ICRAS Tool Works
As reported by Business Standard, the ICRAS tool integrates multiple health indicators to generate a comprehensive risk profile for patients with Type 2 diabetes. It evaluates key medical parameters, laboratory test results, and lifestyle factors to calculate separate risk scores for kidney disease, heart disease, and major cardiac events.
In addition, the tool considers gender-specific differences in risk patterns. As a result, clinicians receive a clearer and more personalized understanding of each patient’s likelihood of developing heart or kidney complications.
Ensuring Data Privacy and Security
Importantly, the platform prioritizes data privacy. The web-based tool does not capture or store any personal information about patients or doctors. Consequently, all risk assessments remain secure while enabling physicians to access valuable clinical insights.
Enabling Early Intervention and Better Outcomes
By identifying high-risk individuals at an early stage, the ICRAS tool allows doctors to tailor treatment strategies more effectively. Furthermore, timely and targeted interventions can slow the progression of heart and kidney complications.
Ultimately, such proactive care can help people living with diabetes maintain better health and improve their long-term quality of life.
