Air India cancels New York, Newark flights for Feb 23; issues helpline numbers amid winter storm alert

Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from New York and Newark for Monday following forecasts of a severe winter storm expected to lash parts of the US East Coast over the weekend.

In a travel advisory, the Tata-owned airline said heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions predicted for Sunday and Monday across New York, New Jersey and adjoining areas could significantly disrupt flight operations.

Blizzard warnings, travel chaos likely

The cancellations come as US authorities escalate warnings over a rapidly intensifying storm that is now forecast to dump between 1 and 2 feet (30–61 cm) of snow across large parts of the northeastern United States

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for New York City, Long Island, Boston and coastal communities across New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Flooding is also possible in parts of New York and New Jersey.

Forecasters say the storm could begin as rain in some areas before turning into heavy snow, with the heaviest accumulation expected overnight Sunday.

Officials have warned that travel could become “dangerous, if not impossible,” with the potential for downed tree limbs and power outages due to snow load and strong winds.

The storm is projected to reach areas around Washington on Sunday morning, then push toward Philadelphia and New York City before advancing to Boston by evening.
